NEW RELEASES FROM THE 75ORLESS RECORD LABEL

von Doom has released "The Descender". Ideal barroom rock and indie-soaked pop, influenced by The Replacements, Dinosaur Jr, The Smithereens, and Pavement. Teetering between just too hip and just plain odd, von Doom, is the retro-hyper-active quartet. The title track is available for free download.

Guitarist and vocalist Eric Fontana has released "Studies in R + B" with his quartet The Ultra Fine Reducers. A longtime fixture on the Providence music scene and musical theater for Trinity Rep and Perishable Theater, Eric was a member of Mother Jefferson in the late nineties and a current member of Hope Anchor. His solo work has previously appeared on the 75orLess 2006 PARL 2XCD Benefit compilation. "Studies in R + B" is a musical road trip of various eras, geographical locations and styles of American Rhythm and Blues music, as seen through the eyes of a modern indie pop-rock mutt. Influences include Paul Westerberg, Jack White, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Otis Redding, Etta James, Buddy Guy, and Big Mama Thorton. You can download the track Happy Time.

Suicide Bill and the Liquors have released "The Devil Said "Hi" to Bill". You can download the title track.

Cliffs & Bangers' "Short Tracks No Brakes" is also now out. Based out of Newport, RI, C&B play powerful surf rock and are RI's answer to Dick Dale, The Ventures, and Man or Astro-man. Download the track Squid Hunter.

The Jesse Minute's "Do or Die" is now out. A split release with Red Tide Records, the 12 songs on "DO or DIE" were culled from a recent 25 song, 3 day DIY recording session. Download the title track Do or Die.
All releases are available for purchase over at the label webstore.

Enjoy a live clip of The Cramps performing "The Way I Walk" from 1978. Not a huge fan but when i was in high school in 1987, i found a cassette copy of "Bad Music For Bad People" lying in the school parking lot and after asking the most likely suspects and no one claiming it, i kept it. to this day, it's one of my favorite all time records. Thanks, Lux.

The album covers a variety of themes: a lullaby for a petulant child, revenge murder on a underground train, friendship, love, loss, and a celebration of life's foibles. Recorded in a Rhode Island basement by the bassist, and mixed by the drummer, "2" is truly a DIY effort. Total budget: $0.00. Total recording cost: $0:00. This release is limited to 150 silkscreened copies, while the label is limited to only 25 copies. You can download the track Lifted and purchase a copy over at the label webpage.

Two new releases from the 75orless label this week.
Minky Starshine's Unidentified Hit Record is like listening to a box of old 8-tracks in your Uncle Don's basement. Recorded primarily by x-Hot Rod Circuit Michael Poorman at Strangeways Recording in Providence, R.I., Minky also teamed up with pal Ken Stringfellow (Posies, Big Star) in Paris, France at Le Domicile Studio, and with Chris Manning (Jellyfish, Guster) out at Salamander Sound in sunny California. This refined line-up features Mike Musburger (Posies, Fastbacks) on drums. You can download the tracks Good to Me or Millennium Wheel.
Changing musical gears completely, Nature/Nurture has released EP001. An instrumental trio born in Fall River, Massachusettes and raised in the Wamsutta Mills of New Bedford. Three new releases today. The first is New Hampshire's Nate Laban "Is Wearing Yellow". Nate is best known for his work with the punk rock band The Frosting. The album is a collection of 16 songs ranging from piano confessionals to organ-driven murder ballads to fleshed out demos of songs originally made for The Frosting. Recorded August through October of 2008 in his pieced together home studio, all instruments on the album were recorded and performed by Nate with the exception of one track. This release is limited to 150 silkscreened copies. The label is limited to 25 copies.

The second is electro synth-pop band Providence, RI's The Inclined and their release "The First Day of Many" The Inclined, Bill Paukert (vocals, synths, programming, drums) and Jeremy Withers (bass, guitar, fuzz) have been playing together since 2000. After a number of lineup changes, the pair decided to change their basic indie-rock approach to accommodate their growing electro-pop leanings. Having now embraced the studio as an instrument and compositional tool, they have distilled their love of bass fuzz and synchronized arpeggiation into their first full album. This release is limited to 50 silkscreened copies.

Six Star General's "Spaceship to Planet Cookie" is now available. Six Star General releases their first collection of new material in fifteen months. Recorded during an all-day session with Scott Rancourt at Summing Point in November 2008, it features thirteen tracks over 31 minutes. As per their contract requirements, it contains two instrumentals. Influences include Minutemen, Devo, and Husker Du. This is limited to 100 silkscreened copies.
All are available for purchase over at the label website.

I see catbird has chimed in on the best of list issue thats floating around. i hold his website in the highest regard and although i am a bit confused by what he is saying, i agree with him - stop overthinking things.
A best of list is simply the releases that a person enjoyed the most in the past year. their selections shouldn't be required to have changed their lives. and maybe a year from now some of the releases don't hold up and aren't listened to as much- big fucking deal. it's supposed to be a snapshot of what you enjoyed the most in the past year. agree, disagree, whatever. read it and move on to the next list. Make a list of your own, read others lists, maybe you will discover an album you missed. i tend to not bother to read them for two reasons-
1. there are too many 2. i trust my own ears over most reviews or lists
i have never really revisited my own best of lists but i am sure there are many i would regret and never listen to anymore but it doesn't change the fact that at the end of that year, when i made the list, i felt that those releases were my favorites for the previous year.
some people are sincere in their lists and others are not but when catbird namechecks Ian Curtis, Joe Strummer and equates music to lust, heartbreak, anxiety, and confusion and then two lines later wonders if we are in danger of taking the fun out of music, i may just be too drained from real life to feel any of those unpleasant emotions through music. i am jealous of him that he has digested the amount of music he has and still feels those things. to equate it to television, i tend to avoid shows that foist more drama into my life because life is dramatic enough. the last thing i need is to escape into a fantasy world for an hour that i spend stressing out over a fictional character.
the short version- stop looking at other people's lists and sneering or questioning their motives. be confident in your own choices and stop pretending you are better than anyone else. if someone enjoyed something more than you, so be it.

From 16 plus minute epics to groove laden jams to I just can't contain myself rockandrolla, The Diggers have something to prove with their left field way of thinking. The ten track release is limited to 150 silkscreened copies, while the label is limited to 25 copies for sale through the website. Alien Father's "Knives With Journalism" has been released. Originally released in May 2008 on Brother and Brother Records, Knives With Journalism was recorded by Alex Seiz in a barn in New Jersey. Knives with Journalism is the second record by noise-shambolic-satanic-sludgecore, pop-gloom-shoegaze, psych-garage three-piece Alien Father. Ten tracks of brooding keyboards, zambonian synths, hyperdelic guitars, and drums. Ten tracks, extremely limited release, only fifty copies in total and the label only has twenty five for sale. Coma Coma's "Does Your Remote Control Have A Remote Control?" has been released. Their debut release, a co-release with Redtide Records, consists of 6 songs over 26 minutes and was recorded by the trio at Satellite Studios with veteran rocker Emerson Torrey (The Raindogs, The Schemers, The Dino Club) as engineer. The end result is six creative and energetic tracks fueled by large quantities of cheap beer. Some influences include the Flaming Lips, Pavement, Fugazi, and the Super Furry Animals. You can download the track Urban Death Maze and purchase a copy over at the label website.

Guntaard's "Rubarb in the Hoo-Ha" has been released. Recorded between April 1996 and May 1998 on a Tascam 4 track cassette and forgotten about, the five members of Güntaard have never all been in the same room at the same time but were all fueled by the same things- bong hits, failed relationships, and unemployment. Using traditional instruments such as guitars, bass, and keyboards as well as drum machines, screwdrivers on metal tables, tape loops, television sets, electronic toys with dying batteries, they recorded over 100 songs in this two year period. Rhubard in the Hoo-Ha is a collection of songs that are heavy on the drum machines and distorted vocals. For fans of Ween, Trollin Withdrawal and Butthole Surfers. Released is limited to 50 silkscreened copies on brown jackets. The How Does It Feel To Be Named Chip EP is available here as a free download until September 15. This online only EP features four of the tracks from the Rhubarb in the Hoo-ha release, which you can purchase over at the 75orLess Records label website.

In Your Ear Records returns to Rhode Island
Four years after closing its historic Thayer Street location, In Your Ear! returns to the Rhode Island music scene at its new location at 462 Main Street in Warren, RI. After 19 years on Thayer Street in Providence, the storied music store shut its doors in 2004, the victim of spiraling rents and taxes, and the rush to legal – and illegal – music downloading. In the meantime, Chris Zingg, part-owner of In Your Ear, opened a separate store, Zingg Music, in the East Bay in 2001. Recently, Zingg entered into discussions with his partners about combining forces and retooling his store as In Your Ear. A deal was struck in early 2008 and the former Zingg Music is now In Your Ear.
As part of IYE's return to the Rhode Island market, the store will be revamped and restocked with an emphasis on new and used vinyl; the store in Warren will carry newly-issued titles as well as hard-to-find collectibles from the past. The store will also stock turntables, phonograph cartridges and record supplies as well as musical instruments and instrument supplies. In Your Ear will also continue to offer music lessons for guitar, bass and drums in its 5 studios.
While most large music retailers are only carrying top hit recordings, the store in Warren will continue its commitment to customer service through its in-depth selection and special-order service for new and out-of-print CDs and LPs. “If you can't find a recording, try us,” says owner Zingg, “We are proud to be part of the Warren revitalization. Come visit us and experience the last of the great record stores!” Established in 1982, In Your Ear has 2 other retail locations in Boston and Cambridge, MA.

75OL-043 Elliott Levin/Weasel Walter/Damon Smith/Scott R. Looney - Summer Rise/Summer Set...Summaries has been released in a silkscreened edition of 150 copies (label limited to 25 copies). A high energy blast of detailed interaction and momentum from a quartet of hardcore free-jazz veterans featuring Philadelphia-based reedist and Cecil Taylor alumni Elliott Levin, notorious Flying Luttenbachers drummer Weasel Walter, bassist Damon Smith and pianist Scott R. Looney. A wide variety of abstract forms are explored on this release, from bizarre pointillism-plus-poetry to full-on raging torrents of sound and fury. This heavy, crystal-clear recording will appeal to old-school free music buffs as well as listeners looking for truly something different delivered with intensity, skill and wildness. A must for fans of ESP-Disk/BYG/FMP Records, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, Peter Brotzmann, et al. Purchase a copy over at the label website.

(Label limited to 25 copies). Heavily influenced by 60's and 70's pop, modern electronic music, and the blue-collar melancholy of Green Bay's industrial surroundings, Turn Blue is a band more interested in conveying emotion through complex melody and deceptively minimal soundscapes than conveying a meaning or message through played-out lyrical ideas. For fans of Elliott Smith, Wilco and Surf's Up-era Beach Boys. Twelve tracks for only $6.00 including shipping and handling. it's funny that four years after the bloggies took notice, my home state weekly alternative paper gets in on the act. the phoenix has always been very kind in their coverage and keeping us in mind is greatly appreciated.

Barn Burning "Bound To Leave This Dark Behind" EP is now available. Their fourth release and first for 75orLess, was recorded by Darren Burke over a two month period in Hyde Park, MA at Makeshift Studios. Alt-country indie rock and atmospheric soundscapes mixed with folk and post-rock for fans of My Morning Jacket, Jay Farrar, Joy Division and Sun Kil Moon. Download the track You Are The Highway and pick up a copy at the label website.

In honor of this year's Most Awkward Thanksgiving Moment, here are a couple of unreleased tracks from Janis Joplin. This is how it went down during a discussion of the Rolling Stones "Rock and Roll Circus":
FFIL: Yoko Ono was just always so painful to listen to. ME: Well, although they sound nothing alike, I think Yoko Ono and Janis Joplin both sound like a bag of cats. FFIL: Janis Joplin is probably my favorite female singer of all time. -sound of crickets- ME: Hmmm, I could use another beer (gets up and leaves the room) later that day.... HER: Did you really tell my father that his favorite singer of all time sounded like a bag of cats? ME: Hmmm, I could use another beer (gets up and leaves the room)
In the annuls of my holiday disasters, it doesn't even make the top ten. #1 will always be my grandmother walking in on me peeing when I was 14, then promptly turning around and announcing to the entire house what she just did.

Suicidal driver gets 8 years for crash that killed 3 musicians November 26, 2007
Jeanette Sliwinski, the former model convicted last month in the deaths of three Chicago musicians who were killed when she rear-ended a car in which they were riding during a failed suicide attempt, was sentenced today to 8 years in prison.
Cook County Circuit Judge Garritt Howard, who found Sliwinski guilty but mentally ill on reckless homicide charges Oct. 26, imposed the sentence during an emotional hearing in the Skokie courtroom where he presided over her bench trial.
Prosecutors had asked that Sliwinski of Morton Grove receive the maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Sliwinski, 25, who has been held in the psychiatric ward of Cook County Jail since the July 2005 lunchtime crash at Dempster Street and Niles Center Road in Skokie, apologized to the relatives and friends of the victims who were in the courtroom, before being sentenced. She could be released from prison in a few years if she receives good-time credit.
"There's not a day that goes by I do not think about the grief and the pain I have caused," Sliwinski, weeping, told the judge while looking toward the victims' families. "I never meant to hurt anybody. I'm sorry."
Mental-health services would be available to Sliwinski in whatever prison she is assigned to, prosecutors said.
Sliwinski's relatives were on hand for the sentencing as were relatives and friends of the men killed in the crash- Chicagoans Michael Dahlquist, 39, John Glick, 35, and Douglas Meis, 29. At the time of the accident, the men were on their lunch break from work at Shure Inc, a Niles company that makes microphones and other audio electronic products.
Sliwinski pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the crash after being charged with first-degree murder. She told authorities she had gotten in a fight with her mother in the family's Morton Grove home before she got in her car, drove east on Dempster and slammed into Dahlquist's car at a stop light.
In his ruling, the judge rejected the first-degree murder charges and said he believed that Sliwinski was trying to kill herself.

Private Eleanor - "Sweethearting" cd (Beechfields)
I remember enjoying this Baltimore band's previous album, "No Straight Lines", a couple years back, and this new album finds the band progressing nicely. Although this album marks the fourth release from Private Eleanor, this is only the second outing for its full-band incarnation (previous releases were primarily solo records from main songwriter, Austin Stahl, with some occasional help from friends). This time around, the album was recorded in a professional studio, resulting in a better (and more varied) sound throughout the record, although the actual songs themselves are just as enjoyable as the ones on the previous releases. Similarly, the music falls in much the same vein as the last full-length, mixing Red House Painters and Ida-styled melancholic pop (with singers Austin and Marian frequently sharing lead vocal duties) with hints of folk and country. You'll find a few upbeat tunes here and there, like "A Better Way To Run" and "Weeds", but the overall mood of the album is generally more subdued, though not quite as sleepy as their last record. MTQ=9/11
Also, head over to Catbird Records. The quickly sold out Cat Prairie is as toe-tappingly catchy as anything Bread or Ambrosia ever recorded.
The Official Soundtrack to the new Farrelly Brothers film, ‘THE HEARTBREAK KID’ will be available Tuesday, October 2nd. It features The Flaming Lips, World Party, David Bowie, Matthew Sweet with Susanna Hoffs playing Michael Nesmith's classic "Different Drum" and many others.
On November 6, the 1979 Nick Drake box set "Fruit Tree" will be reissued. In addition to all three of Drake's studio albums - Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon- it includes a DVD of the film 'A Skin Too Few' and a 108-page book. Limited to 8,000 copies, the sleeves feature replicas of the original artwork. Also, there will be a limited release of 2000 vinyl copies, which also includes the DVD and book.

from our friends over at Tiny Showcase
To the Tinyship of the Showcase Municipal Nation:
For those of you keeping track of my internet woes, I remain without a reliable source, a reliable internet dealer with internet hook-ups, and continue to trek through new cities with computers strapped to my back seeking out kind souls who believe in all that is The Showcase (Analogue Shop) while ON THE OTHER HAND, Jon B's got all the internet a man could ever need. The guy's practically rolling in internet; wasting away the TS Trust Fundz with online poker and Yahtzee (latter half = totally true. Dude's addicted to digital Yahtzee. Yup!)
So this Showcase, the one that's coming at you this very eve, this one is pretty serious. Do you guys know Ray Fenwick? Do you know what a letterpress print is? Do you know that I'm not allowed to use letterpress as an adjective or a verb or a hanging gerund anymore or else I get a messenger pigeon sent directly to my window from Dan the Letterpress Magician threatening to cut off my letterpressy letterpressing sourcez?
So you know how when you are writing something you are taught to write for your audience? Ray Fenwick is my audience, the one I envision when I pen my digital letters, the one I attempt to slay with language. He's so funny that it's sort of unfair. Much like the Red Sox vs. Yankees rivalry; he's the Yankees and I don't think he even knows there is a rivalry, whereas I sit in my basement printing shirts about our rivalry and selling them outside of stadiums.
He's funnier than I am. That's all there is to it. Man! It feels good to get that off my chest. He sends emails that make me laugh aloud in public places in foreign countries. And then again walking down the street when I remember them. And again. Basically he's my rival as well as my nemesis and I've tricked him into doing a TS print with no intention of paying him.
Check out his Flickr:

TWO NEW RELEASES FROM 75ORLESS RECORDS
75OL-022 The Followers - Secret Handshake
Silkscreened Edition of 50 copies. Label limited to 20 numbered copies with blue, bronze, green and red inks on silver jackets.
$6.00 S&H Included
Track Listing
1. Has Its Moments 2. Helter Shelter 3. Turning On The Charm 4. Intentional Walk 5. I'm On It 6. A Day In The Afterlife 7. Pretty Sneaky Sis 8. Suicide Pact 9. Secret Handshake 10. Never Trust A Junkie
After a decade spent as ghost detainees incarcerated at an undisclosed detention camp, the legendary and incendiary Followers return with an album hailed as "Un-American" and labeled "Subversive" by the Department of Homeland Security and the hegemonic Christian Coalition. Long feared confiscated or deleted under the auspices of the inestimable Patriot Act, the insurrectionary and vitriolic album dubbed 'Secret Handshake' finally makes its commercial debut. Admittedly an intractable reaction to animal vivisection, authoritarianism, and rampant fascism in America, and inspired to a great extent by psychotropic and flammable solvents, the release of the mercurial and vehement 10 track recording promises to deliver The Followers back into CIA hands to be remanded in Eastern Europe for another decade.
75OL-024 Killing Pablo - A Collection of Songs on Compact Disc
Silkscreened Edition of 150 copies with white jackets. Label limited to 10 numbered copies with silver jackets.
$6.00 S&H Included
Track Listing
1. turquoise mountain 2. the eunich from munich 3. live from the point five 4. opinionated 5. das funk 6. new weathermen 7. the spaceman lee 8. dancing marxist
Recorded and mixed in two marathon 8 hour sessions with engineer Jason Macierowski, "A Collection of Songs..." revisits the mammoth crescendos and washed out space guitar of their previous release and expands them, taking tense quiet melodies and then throwing them at a brick wall of guitar shrapnel and shattered drum sticks. For fans of Built to Spill, Shellac, the Who, Hum, Mogwai, etc.
lastly, a couple of sites I recommend, Worthless Trash and Be The Boy.

"Philadelphia/Brooklyn band Bottom of the Hudson suffered a serious van wreck on Sunday, July 29th, while returning home after the final date of a short East Coast tour to promote their new album, Fantastic Hawk, released just two weeks ago on July 17. While on I-40 near Clinton, NC, a tire blew out sending the van out of control and flipping it multiple times. Bassist Trevor Butler was killed in the accident and drummer Greg Lytle is currently in ICU in Chapel Hill, NC. The other members of the band, Eli Simon, Michael Prince and William Chesterton Chambers, suffered minor injuries and were released from the hospital.
We didn't have an opportunity to get to know Trevor Butler as well as we would have liked, but he was a great guy and a great musician. He was instrumental in the evolution of the band's sound over the years. In addition to playing in Bottom of the Hudson for the last several years, Trevor also was a founding member in fellow-Philadelphia group Coyote. He was utterly devoted to music and helped many, many bands set-up shows in Philadelphia. We are devastated by his loss and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the band and their families. Thanks to everyone who has sent condolences and well-wishes.
We are currently accepting donations via Paypal (the address is both@absolutelykosher.com) on behalf of Trevor's family and for Greg's medical bills resulting from the accident. A benefit show is being discussed, but we're all still reeling from this tragedy. We will update our home page as news of Greg's condition and progress on further fundraisers comes in. Your generosity in this difficult time is appreciated.
best, Cory Brown and everyone at Absolutely Kosher Records

The DIY way - 75orLess builds a lean distribution machine
By BOB GULLA PROVIDENCE PHOENIX July 24, 2007 4:52:16 PM
Local rocker Mark MacDougall has come up with his own way of circumventing the freefall of the recording industry. He’s making his own CDs on the cheap. He started 75orLess more than five years ago as an online outlet for reviews; the name refers to the number of words in their critiques. Today, the site’s review army receives upwards of 100 submissions per month and has amassed an archive of more than 1100 reviews. But then the wheels really started turning. “I began hearing local music that I really liked,” said Mark, “and I knew it was never going to get heard.” MacDougall cranked up his record appreciation from that of a fan to producer, designer, and manufacturer. MacDougall figured he could get discs made cheaply and still come up with numbers that worked financially. “We had talked about it for years,” he admits, “then we finally agreed to just do it.” After designing a logo and setting up a web space, MacDougall and some friends set about getting records made. Their first releases, Staggering Statistics’ Pixelated Ones & Zeros EP and A Passing Feeling’s eponymous EP, came out in January 2006 and they’ve been since issued at least one disc a month. “I try to keep the process as simple as possible,” says MacDougall. “The bands appreciate it. Many have come back to do a second release with me. I’d love to see them move on. But I still love their music and don’t mind putting it out!” Here’s how it works: Each band provides the label with a finished copy of a CD and accompanying artwork. MacDougall has a burning tower which can duplicate 60 discs an hour. He then takes the images, makes screen prints of them, and produces the jackets. Each cover is hand-printed and no two are exactly alike. Says MacDougall, “You get a CD that looks professionally done; you just can’t do it any cheaper.” He backtracks. “If you don’t screen print it, you can do it cheaper. You can Xerox it. But it would never look as good as the way we do it.” There are 150 CDs in each initial 75orLess edition, which costs a total of $300. Thirty of those CDs go to press, 60 to the artist, and 60 to the label to sell on the site. The budgeted expenses make it easy for the artists and the label to earn a little cash to defray the upfront cost, plus the artist retains the rights to the project so if a label with real money comes along, there’s nothing holding the band back from seizing the opportunity. MacDougall, who plays bass for Six Star General and has a real job on the side, is excited about his upcoming to-do list. This summer his production rate is increasing radically, to roughly one platter a week. Here’s the current release schedule:
7.24: THE ’MERICANS - Where All Dead Leaves Go 7.31: KILLING PABLO - A Collection of Songs on Compact Disc 8.3: THE FOLLOWERS - Secret Handshake 8.10: THE COLD WAR - Le Petit Morte 8.18: SIX STAR GENERAL - Already On One 9.1: CHOLO - Unlimited Nights and Weekends 9.7: VARIOUS ARTISTS - You Must Be This Tall Soundtrack (Documentary on Rocky Point Park with Neutral Nation, Johnny Carlevale, the ’Mericans, and the Masons) And the not so immediate future looks bright as well, with releases by Chris Evil & the Taints, Candy Thong, Von Doom, Fashion Failures, and Torches all on the horizon. The fact that MacDougall can do a stylish job on releases featuring quality indie rock — and not solely by local artists — is nothing short of good old-fashioned Yankee ingenuity. “It’s a style dictated by economics,” he says. “We only have this much money, what kind of design can we come up with?” The support of friends and enterprising local musicians who want to be hands-on with their products helps the assembly line process move a little quicker. “I’m getting more help, more excitement, and more people wanting to be a part of it to assist,” MacDougall says. “If anything, I’m learning something with each release and we’re getting stronger as we go.” Watch for the free 75orLess Live Fest happening on August 18 at The Penalty Box in Providence featuring Fred Kendal Abong, Killing Pablo, A Passing Feeling, and Six Star General. This is a triple cd release party.

WHERE ALL DEAD LEAVES GO was recorded by the band and mixed by PETE DONNELLY of the FIGGS and is full of spacy rootsy moody textural sounds reminiscent of PURPLE IVY SHADOWS, the group that 'MERICANS singer/guitarist CHRIS DALTRY fronted from 1991-2002.
THE 'MERICANS mostly draw influence from the psychedelic folk-rock bands of the 1960's like THE BYRDS and CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, as well as more current artists like RYAN ADAMS, BEACHWOOD SPARKS, the shins, THE FEELIES, the jayhawks THE PERNICE BROTHERS, daniel lanois + WILCO.

Wow, hey, it's another new release from 75orLess Records!
75OL-019 Kaiser Cartel - Live From Breakthru Radio EP
Brooklyn, New York's Kaiser Cartel is a two-piece band, for whom the genre "minimalist orchestral pop" was invented. Vocal harmonies galore on top of sugary sweet choruses and great hooks. This 5 track EP was recorded live at Blue Ribbon Sound in May 2007.
Although there were 300 copies made, unless you catch them on their current West Coast tour, you can only get the remaining copies at 75orLess Records' website. We are limited to 50 copies but ours have special green and pink screened jackets instead of the normal royal blue offered on the tour. Even with the new postal rate increase, this cd is only $6.00 postpaid in the U.S. You can order it here.
Listen to them at their myspace page or go to their website.
Thanks, Rog & Dee

i never really repost any the promotional emails i get. 90% of them i read through very quickly and delete. it's an efficient system. anyways, this one interested me as I am a big fan of both KRS-One and Tortoise.
Chicago DJ-producer-multi-instrumentalist Copperpot, aka Daniel Kupyers, WYLA? is his second full-length and the follow up to 2005's Chapter 7. The stage shy artist called upon hip hop peers and legends such as KRS-One, Prince Po and Braintax, to help construct WYLA? and extended unlikely invitations to prog post-rockers like Dan Bitney and Jeff Parker of Tortoise and Matthew Lux of Isotope 217.
Copperpot has been producing hip hop since 2000 when he joined The Phonograph Scientists, a Chicago-based turntable crew. Copperpot will release WYLA? On August 7th, 2007 on the EV Productions label.

Coffinberry - God Dam Dog (Morphius)
Coffinberry start off by trying to knock you over, throw in a piano ballad and slowly build the aggression back up song by song. Influenced by everyone from the Afghan Whigs, Arcwelder, Hüsker Dü, Uncle Tupelo and June of 44, the strategy of keeping everything so short works to their benefit. The barely-two-minute "Earthworms in the Sun" sounds like it was written by Jeff Magnum while shooting speed and driving 100 miles per hour. While feel-good bands are all the rage, here is proof you don't always need a hug. - mark Released 05.01.2007

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81 (RCA)
BRMC's aptly titled song "Weapon of Choice" from their latest Baby 81 takes them to battle using sexy vocals, thick, distorted guitar riffs and sultry basslines. The guys' surprise attack comes from the heartbreakingly acoustic-based "Am I Only;" a track that taps into deep emotions and heartbreak. Veering between the edgy and uplifting Kinks-like "Berlin" and the orchestral, utterly depressing "All You Do is Talk," BRMC creates a varied, thrilling rocked-out album. It's totally hot. - miriam Released 05.01.2007

Haste the Day - Pressure the Hinges (Solid State/Tooth & Nail)
Haste the Day's first release with new lead vocalist Stephen Keech proves to be their most mature effort to date. Keech's effect on the band's sound is immediately apparent on the album's title track, "Pressure the Hinges." The album's song structure is more sophisticated, due in part to an improved balance in the interplay between melodic harmonies and guttural screams. However, with the exceptions of "Janet's Planet" and "Chorus of Angels," the production makes most of the other tracks sound too similar. - j.p. Released 03.20.2007

Remate - No Land Recordings (Acuarela)
No Land Recordings is a completely reimagined approach for Remate, whose last album was as direct a message from performer to listener as they come. The material here is the work of a reborn studio rat; scattered, but thematic and dreamlike. Twenty-five songs (and songlets) are spread the length of two discs, most every one indicating a refusal to compromise. You're either on board or you aren't, but few albums this conceptually sound will disappoint in the long run. If In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is your late night jam, consider giving this a spin. - paul Released 05.15.2007

The Rikters - Don't You Get It EP (self released)
The Rikters are back with Don't You Get It, a 7-song ep that flies by while listening to it and gets better every time. Guitarist/singer Doug Jenkins really shows off his voice on these songs, especially on "Want It You Got It." "You" is a flat out rocker and parts of "Give Me the Wheel" dabble in Radiohead territory. Great bass lines, sharp guitar and pounding drums are prevalent throughout this indie/power pop disc. With 2 eps under their belt, I'm hoping for a full length follow up that rocks as hard as this ep. - kyle j. Released 02.27.2007

Throbbing Gristle - Part Two. The Endless Not (Mute)
The 25-year wait for the new Throbbing Gristle album is over. Part Two. The Endless Not isn't nearly as subversive or confrontational as earlier recordings, and it seems the godparents of industrial music have mellowed with age. They do retain a signature sound; a pulsating, dark dirge spiked with noisy loops and saturated with murky ambiance. The music is at times complex and almost pretty, but absent is the challenging aural assault that once earned Throbbing Gristle the title "Wreckers of Civilization." - j. daltry Released 04.03.2007
Sonya Cotton - Out of the Ocean (self released)
I expect a lot from my sophomores, and Sonya Cotton gets an A. To her second album of sorrowful folk- the lyrics evoke loss and yearning- she has added piano, percussion, and backing vocals here and there. I wish we could clone her, so everyone can have Sonya doing their harmonies; the end of "The Dying Light" has achingly beautiful ones. Her voice is just lovely, as if Karen Peris, Natalie Merchant and Judy Collins mixed theirs together to create one that wasn't babyish or throaty or reedy. Just lovely. - meredith Released 04.03.2007 Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (We Put Out/Atlantic)
Porcupine Tree's 56th album (or something like that) is a gallery of moody, almost supernatural prog rock with skyscraper-high songs that pour from an always-on faucet of beauty and throbbing heaviness. Not familiar with Steve Wilson and Co.? Well, Alex Lifeson (Rush) and Robert Fripp (King Crimson) make appearances and while the 'Tree shares only the "prog" tag with those bands, they could've toured together in 1981. If you choose to navigate the Seven Seas of Porcupine Tree, begin by hoisting your sails here. - jason m. Released 04.24.2007 Goon Moon - Licker's Last Leg (Ipecac)
Goon Moon features Jeordie White (Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails) and Chris Goss (Masters of Reality). The songs on Licker's Last Leg feature disturbing yet beautiful lyrics combined with an interesting mix of industrial, desert rock, and other unusual musical styles. Each track has its own unique personality and the album as a whole offers pleasing, and sometimes surprising treats for the listener's ears. This is some of the best and most creative work I've heard in quite some time. - j.p. Released 05.08.2007 Voxtrot - ST (Playlouder/Beggars Group)
Coulda. Shoulda. Woulda. For a couple of years now, Voxtrot have promised some great and not-so-great things through a string of eps that ranged in quality from OMG to WTF. Now it's clear the band really needed the space provided by a full lp to stretch out and keep some of those promises. Ramesh Srivastava's previously direct songwriting style is obscured at times, but that's far from a bad thing. In actuality, it shows Voxtrot is a band with many moods never revealed before by the one-dimensional nature of those eps. They could, should and finally did. - paul Released 05.22.2007
Finally, 75orLess Records released Fred Kendal Abong's "The Hand Trembler" today in a silkscreened edition of 150 copies. 14 tracks in just around 45 minutes. Only $6.00 postpaid. You can order a copy over at 75orLess Records.

Sage Francis - Human the Death Dance
One of underground's biggest rappers from the smallest state has risen again to present one of his best albums to date. Sage Francis's 2nd release for Epitaph records Human the Death Dance is a cryptic look into this MC's journey. With a storybook lyrical flow mastered from his Poetry Slam days, Sage has his feet strongly planted in hip hop with this dark and powerful piece of art. Elliott Smith - New Moon (Kill Rock Stars)
Elliott Smith was the fifth Beatle, just born at the wrong time, and in Nebraska. With George as the quiet one, Elliott would be the sad one. He created beautiful melodies and harmonies over his seven profound years as a solo artist, a number of which remained officially unreleased. New Moon is not a collection of throw-away demos or re-arranged sound fragments, but rather 24 must-hear songs recorded between 1995's Elliott Smith and Either/Or in 1997. - cormac Released 05.08.2007

Wheat - Everyday I Said a Prayer for Kathy and Made a One Inch Square (Empyrean)
True to their roots, Wheat's fourth album feels like a sonic art project disguised as an indie rock record. Aside from a few head-bobbers, notably "Move = Move," at least half the record qualifies as slow-burning sound experimentation, topped off by loose, meandering vocal melodies. This isn't feelgood summertime car stereo fare; it's a classic grower, and feels intensely personal. This album almost requires—and rewards—the use of headphones, heart, and mind. - marnie c. Great Northern - Trading Twilight for Daylight (Eenie Meenie)
Great Northern's Trading Twilight for Daylight has a soothing, introspective tone, thanks to neatly arranged songs using piano, synths and swirling guitars under mesmerising vocals. The band transmit a poppy, radio-friendly persona, particularly with "Just a Dream." Tracks like "Telling Lies" present a hopeful, upbeat mood that wouldn't be out of place if featured on Grey's Anatomy. Overall, this work is easy on the ears and perfect for summer. - miriam Released 05.15.2007

Albert Hammond, Jr. - Yours to Keep (Scratchie/New Line)
From the first strains of toy piano to the neatly placed acoustic guitar riffs, Yours to Keep sounds a little bit like what could've happened if the Strokes had met on the warm streets of L.A. and spent some time in the sun before recording. Nonetheless, Strokes references should be kept to a bare minimum because Hammond more than holds his own when flying the nest. This is an album for just about anyone interested in acquiring some awesome new pop music for the upcoming summer days. - diana Released 03.06.2007

reprinted from the April issue of Providence Monthly
75 Or Less Records - April 07
In a way, the compact disc has become its own worst enemy, just as the music industry as a whole is often its own worst enemy. The format was introduced in 1982 promising "perfect sound forever," yet the average life expectancy of a CD player remains about five years, and no music collection is without a stack of skipping, unplayable discs. In retrospect, it seems as if its two decade reign has been a march towards self-defeat and obsolescence. The format came into vogue because of its superior sound quality, but the virtues that pushed it to the top of the musical heap also spell its doom: disposability, affordability, and ease of production. The compact disc is not meant to last, and now the music industry is reaping the barren fields it sowed with a disposable cash crop.
Part of the problem is that the CD never became the artifact the vinyl record did. The disc is small and flimsy, easy to scratch, and easy to lose. The packaging is cheap, breakable plastic and the inserts are too small for either memorable artwork or engaging liner notes. Compare that to the rugged durability of the record and the artful packaging its size accommodates: think of Andy Warhol's classic cover for the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers with its functioning zipper, or the monolithic beauty of Led Zeppelin's gatefold II LP. The CD was never hospitable enough to such innovative presentation for one of them to become a treasured possession. Perhaps that's why in 2002, for the first time since the ascendance of the CD, sales of that format dropped, while sales of records increased.
One person yet to give up on the compact disc is Mark Macdougall, owner of 75 Or Less Records, a small label run out of his home in Warren, RI. The label is an outgrowth of 75orless.com, a website dedicated to music journalism in easily digested, bite-size portions. "I wanted it to be a place where you could stop in and within two or three minutes read very straightforward reviews," Mark explains, "and know what things sounded like, and then move on." Hence the site's name: its album reviews are all 75 words or less. This philosophy is an interesting counterpoint to the wordy elitism of pitchforkmedia.com, perhaps the foremost source for rock writing on the web, and one prone to statements like, "Air creates the alternate now, an environment that begs escapism without denying humanity. Talkie Walkie may mollify Air's overt Frenchness, but should in no way be deemed a sudden opening of the soul." The 75 or Less take on the same album: "Love them or hate them, this is still the best kind of cosmic French sci-fi electro-lounge pop you can possibly find."
Since October of 2001, 75orless.com has been cranking out reviews five days a week, for a total of about 250 albums per year (out of 1500 submissions), and averaging 400 to 900 readers a day. In 2006, Mark decided to take the next logical step.
"I was hearing great music that nobody else was getting to hear," he says of some of those submissions, "and it was frustrating for me that it was absolutely brilliant, but had no chance of reaching anyone else." The result of this frustration was 75 Or Less Records, a boutique label that boasted an impressive twelve releases in its first year, including a double-CD compilation of 31 local acts. Despite that imposing workload, Mark maintains, "This is just a hobby—a hobby that takes forty hours a week now." As a thirty-nine-year-old suburban homeowner with a successful career in data center configuration, he can't be bothered with spending his spare time on a golf course: "Instead of spending three hours chasing a ball, I'd rather spend three hours digging through submissions and trying to hear some band I've never heard before."
Drawing on the inspiration of DIY-moguls like Gregg Ginn, founder of 80s punk powerhouse SST Records, and local labels like Ben McOsker's Load and Brian Oakley's Corleone, Mark is trying to deliver a quality product on a shoestring budget, well under the radar of a bloated music industry slowly collapsing beneath its own weight. Issuing 150 copies of each CD at a cost of $300, the costs are split between the band and the label, as are the final products, and, naturally, the profits. For the bands, it's an opportunity to have a professional-sounding recording in unique, handmade packaging to distribute at their shows. For Mark, it's a product to sell on 75orless.com, the only method of distribution for the label.
"It's a small accomplishment," Mark declares, "Very small. Nobody's getting rich, but we can take pride in the fact that we actually turned a profit."
Contrary to those sounding the compact disc's death-knell, 75 Or Less strives to create a product that will have the prestige and value of a good, old-fashioned vinyl LP. Each album is issued in a sturdy cardboard case, screen-printed by hand, oftentimes with the artists themselves pitching in. For example, Mark cites Chris Daltrey of The 'Mericans, who released their debut on the label last year: "He was at my house for a week straight working on getting his CDs done." Perhaps it is possible for the CD to have that artifact quality it's sorely been missing.
"CDs in plastic cases are entirely disposable media. Ours have cardboard packaging. By printing onto them, they're unique. We'd like to think we're incorporating art into the music."
Mark looks forward to putting out another twelve albums this year, including efforts by the F.I.D.s, which will be out by press time, previously unreleased tracks by the Purple Ivy Shadows, and possibly Mark's own prolific power-trio Six Star General. He will also be joining forces with Tim O'Keefe's newly-minted digital label Cozy Music to release the debut by the Cold War: 75 Or Less will put out the hard copies, and Cozy Music will distribute MP3s over the internet.
"I hope 75 Or Less never becomes a job," Mark says in summation. "I would prefer to keep it what it is, which is a serious hobby. I'm doing it because I love it. That's what keeps it fun."

75orLess Records Latest News
5-10-07 New Masons review over at Midwest Record. The Masons "Let You Down Easy"- One man cult band comes back from a long lay off with an accidental record a fan encouraged him to make. Loaded with the kind of skewed observational songs that the slightly malcontented love, prime mover Kraig Jordan digs into the chest of songs that have been rolling around his head and drawer since his last set a long time ago. With a bunch of like minded pals with varying degrees of marquee value on board, the latest was delivered. Never falling into the twee trap, it's that kind of middle class nuttiness that college kids can't seem to get enough of.
The Masons have also been getting play on the wonderful Insomnia Radio.
4-30-07 Both Six Star General cds are back in print, this time with white jackets. $5.00. You can get the last remaining copies of the original pressing over at Interpunk on the web or if you live in the Rhode Island area, Armageddon Shop carries most of our releases.
4-27-07...75OL-017 Guntaard "Vote Monkey's Butt" is now available. Thirteen tracks in 30 minutes. For fans of Ween, Trollin Withdrawal, Experimental Audio Research and the Butthole Surfers. Order it here.

4-9-07 Three new reviews in the April issue of Providence Monthly.
The Masons - Let You Down Easy
This is a sprawling record, jumping stylistically from song to song, but always remaining firmly rooted in 60's-style jangle and catchy hooks. Bounding from Kinks-y rock to roadhouse blues, to melancholy acoustic ballads like a less alcoholic Guided By Voices, the Masons deliver one of the most ecletic albums I've heard from a local band.
A Passing Feeling - We Might Not Sleep At All This Year
New York's A Passing Feeling bristle with energy and deliver a constant stream of hooks and melodies that evoke Ted Leo or the New Pornographers, but their sound is a bit more stripped down and raw. The guitars are trebly and frantic, the drums bash away insistantly, and the vocals are likely to be stuck in your head for hours afterwards.
Six Star General - Ice Machine
A pure-power trio, Six Star General delivers jagged, angular riffs in the vein of Wire, but with the swagger and punch of Black Flag. The simple lyrics beg to be chanted loudly in bars and the songs don't hang around long enough to indulge in solos, but for fans of powerful guitar rock, this is definately one to check out.
4-5-07 Many of the 75orLess Records bands were nominated for awards from the Rhode Island Arts magazines. In the Providence Phoenix, nominees are-
LOUD ACT Six Star General
ROOTS ACT The 'Mericans
BEST ALBUM 'Merican Recordings - The 'Mericans
BEST SONG "Man On Edge" by The Propellers, "Spaceman" by The Masons
In Motif Magazine, the nominee is-
ALBUM OF THE YEAR "Let You Down Easy" by The Masons.
Other friends of ours nominated include The Cold War, Badman, Barn Burning, The Wrong Reasons, Sharks Come Cruisin, Get Him Eat Him, Eric Fontana, Ben Pilgrim, Cuzin Eddy, Heather Rose, Superchief Trio, Neo Nouveau, Brunt of It, Mustache Ride.
3-30-07 Another review of The Masons in The Noise.
THE MASONS- Let You Down Easy
The Masons have built a big album here, 14 songs and clocking at 55 minutes. That's too much for me in one listen unless I'm zoning (read that to mean whatever you like). They could have split this into two albums- the material is that varied and good enough. However, that small issue aside, the disc starts with a refreshing punkish blast of songcraft, only to be followed by a laid back psychedelic groove on the next song. Just when you think you're gonna get another punk song, they shift it DOWN even more with a harmonica-laden tune Neil Young would be proud to sing. More energy appears as the songs go on, proving that the guys didn't get the hard on first and limp-dick it to the finish line later. Exact song critiques are out of the scope of this review, but let's say that these guys have an excellent groove with great balance, power and musical sensibility -Mike Loce.
3-7-07 New review of The Masons - Let You Down Easy over at Not Lame
The Masons - Let You Down Easy
14 that dig in a lot of different and very cool places resulting in a treasure that is hard to describe beyond the simple statement "this is really, really good material!". Well, think some upbeat Luna, some early REM, Throwing Muses, some new wave pop circa 1981, Travelin' Wilburys/Tom Petty-cum-ELO, Mott The Hoople/Stones("Class Action"), My Morning Jacket and Ass Ponys and, well you hopefully get the idea, it's not going to be easily classifiable! That is a very good thing here, too. Let You Down Easy features appearances by Don Sanders (Medicine Ball), Dave Narcizo (Throwing Muses), Jeffrey Underhill (Velvet Crush), Eric Fontana, Sarah Lupo, and other Rhode Island musicians.
"Boasting an uncanny ability to craft a song which actually contains a melody line that's not only catchy but also creative, The Mason's core member and benevolent svengali Kraig Jordan, had a hand in writing each of the disc's fourteen tracks. To label these tracks as eclectic would win you the 2007 Understatement of the Year Award. There's something from all corners of the band's influence crate, which they pull off with varying degrees of effectiveness from song to song. I can hear everyone from Marc Bolan to Mark Knopfler on this record, all the while demonstrating an adept understanding of the elusive writing/recording/studio process. Perusing around the tracks is like taking an audible history lesson through the changing, varying styles that made up the rock & roll era.. The result is a creative and somewhat unorthodox project that is all about the song.-Motif Magazine. Very Highly Recommended.
Another great review of A Passing Feeling's - We Might Not Sleep At All This Year over at Is This Music?
A Passing Feeling- We Might Not Sleep At All This Year
With an inlay card which repeats ‘drink destroy’ and a drumbeat cribbed from ‘Gary Gilmore’s Eyes’ to open, A Passing Feeling’s modus operandi is quite clear - janglesome punk rock which wades into our lives with the sole intention of nihilistic practices. Referencing off-kilter punk like the Minutemen, emo like the Promise Ring, and for UK-philes, the Libertines, it’s a tried-and-tested 10 songs in half-an-hour format as choruses are bellowed out, fingers are shredded on guitars strings and drum rims, and tears and sweat and tears are expunged. In other words, a draining shattering experience and one you’ll be all the better for.
3-5-07 New Review over at Indie Pages of the Lame Drivers- The Captain Amazing EP" (75orLess Records)
I know what you might be thinking - ten songs goes a bit beyond the definition of EP! Well, this is actually two EPs on a single disc; the first five tracks is a reissue of their self-released debut from 2004 that never reached more than a few people through homemade cd-rs, while the latter half of this disc is comprised of scattered songs recorded over the last couple years. In their best moments, they sound like a young Replacements or Guided By Voices (with some of the later songs even reminding me a bit of the Exploding Hearts), but then they'll include a song like "Gods Of Thunder And Lightning STRIKE!!!", which is basically the band joking around with instrumental metal in their garage for a few minutes. The first five songs were recorded in their basement, while the second five sound more like they came from a studio, but the songwriting is fairly consistent even if the fidelity isn't. This release is limited as well, so don't miss out again! MTQ=7/10
3-1-07...75OL-016 The F.I.D.'s "Cry Me a Rivet" is now available. The F.I.D.'s first release since 1997 has arrived in a silkscreened edition of 100 copies. "Cry Me a Rivet" spans the entire 12 year history of Rhode Island's least talented yet most beloved band. Nine tracks in 14 minutes. For fans of the Germs, Dead Milkmen, and The F.U.'s. Order it here.
2-10-07...75OL-015 The Masons "Let You Down Easy" is officially available for purchase. The first thirty copies will include a copy of The Mason's 1999 release "Change Me Back" in a special hand silkscreened and numbered edition. Order it here.
1-15-07 New review posted of the A Passing Feeling cd "We Might Not Sleep At All This Year" over at Indie Pages. Reposted here for your convenience.
A Passing Feeling - "We Might Not Sleep At All This Year"(75 Or Less)
Named after a Thermals song, this band really blew me away with their debut EP a couple years ago, so I was really looking forward to their first full-length. The music is a bit different this time around - not as hyperactive (and it sounds a bit less like the Thermals this time around, as well), but though the pace of the songs might have slowed a bit, there seems to be even more intensity to them somehow. Listening to these songs and the lyrics is like watching someone who believes they are completely indestructible (and quite possibly are) smashing through everything in their path, against all odds, to reach their destination. They may be exhausted or discouraged, but they rarely show it. A lot of the songs have a road/driving theme to them, as if they were written about (or in anticipation of) the trials of touring, which is something they plan to do a lot of, so look out for 'em! MTQ=10/10
1-1-07 Two 75orLess Records releases make the Top 15 local cds by Bob Gulla over at the Providence Phoenix.
The ’Mericans ’Merican Recordings "Chris Daltry has always been an absorbing writer, and that quality surges abundantly on these Recordings. Inspired by the Johnny Cash effort of the same name (sort of), Daltry dawdles around that mysterious, romantic, pastoral mood that suits him so well. Here’s hoping for Volume 2."
Six Star General's Ice Machine
"Old school indie rock that hearkens back to the time when indie rock had balls. Recorded in four hours with no overdubs, this 11-song monster is a groove-a-rama in the vein of early Minutemen and Yo La Tengo, with lots of wah-wah, savage bass-drum rhythms, and angular brawn."

May 8th, 2007:
Shannon Wright - Let In The Light - CD
After four solo records on Quarterstick, Shannon has come back with her most revealing record yet. "Let in the Light" is for gray skies and quiet moments, for furtive emotions and uncompromising catharsis. With songs tinged with Bohemian folk, Parisian melodies and more piano than ever before, this record is full of honest emotion.
April 10th, 2007:
CocoRosie - The Adventures of Ghosthorse & Stillborn - LP/CD
This album is a departure from the obscured blur of stained glass reve to a more self-exploitive memoir. Parts are dreamy and parts are savage, but, as with an opera where death represents a secret heaven, the whole record feels like a black diamond in the snow.
March 20th, 2007:
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Living With The Living - CD/LP
For their fifth full-length release (and first with Touch and Go Records), Ted Leo and the Pharmacists met up with Brendan Canty (Fugazi) at Long View Farms to iron out a new set of anthems that arrive with a confident and outspoken immediacy. With "Living with the Living," Ted & Co. wipe clean the slate that once held names like Weller, Strummer and Bragg and indulge some of their farthest-reaching musical ambitions.

The For Carnation - Promised Works - CD
Hey, you there -- check out this old stuff by The For Carnation! We like it pretty well. That is to say, we like it well enough to repackage the recordings, originally released by Matador as "Marshmallows" and "Fight Songs", and celebrate them now as "Promised Works"!!
August 21st, 2007:
Mekons - Natural - CD
Removed from the restraints of conventional studio technology, the Mekons navigate an undulating sonic landscape of lavish melodies, mantric chants and shimmering acoustic experimentation all the while displaying the same natural grace and precision that drives the sparkling salmon forever upstream through the fierce current to mate and die. "Natural" is the Mekon's first CD of new material since 2002's critically acclaimed "OOOH!"

THE RECORD LABEL
75orless started the 75orless Record Label back in January 2006 and has since released about one cd per month. Although many of the bands are based out of our Rhode Island locale, some of our releases were bands that submitted their cds to 75orless for reviews and ended up signing to our label, including Italy's Turnpike Glow and New York's A Passing Feeling. The goal of our label is to give more exposure to small bands that are making great music, splitting profits with the bands 50-50, handsilkscreening our jackets to create something unique for each purchaser and keeping our prices affordable. Go over to our website and check our what we have to offer. Thanks from everyone here at the 75orless Record Label.
75OL-017 Guntaard "Vote Monkey's Butt" is now available. Recorded between April 1996 and May 1998 and using traditional instruments such as guitars, bass, and keyboards as well as drum machines, screwdrivers on metal tables, tape loops, television sets, electronic toys with dying batteries and cups full of ice. Thirteen tracks in 30 minutes. For fans of Ween, Trollin Withdrawal, Experimental Audio Research and Butthole Surfers. 25 silkscreened copies. $5.00 postpaid.
75OL-016 The F.I.D.'s "Cry Me a Rivet" is now available. The F.I.D.'s first release since 1997 spans the entire 12 year history of Rhode Island's least talented yet most beloved band. For fans of the Germs, Dead Milkmen, and The F.U.'s. Silkscreened edition of 100 copies. $5.00 postpaid.
75OL-015 The Masons- Let You Down Easy. After almost seven years, The Masons return with Let You Down Easy, the follow up to the critically acclaimed Change Me Back. Think Neil Young, The Beatles, Velvet Underground, Ween and you're getting close. Let You Down Easy features appearances by Don Sanders (Medicine Ball), Dave Narcizo (Throwing Muses), Jeffrey Underhill (Velvet Crush), Eric Fontana, Sarah Lupo, and other Rhode Island musicians.. fourteen tracks for just $10.00 postpaid.
75OL-014 A Passing Feeling- We Might Not Sleep At All This Year in a silkscreened edition of only 150 copies. This record was made to be chanted in basements across America. The lyrics reflect the dirtier parts of early twenties life - drinking, driving, bliss, heartache and everything else in between. Produced by Mark Ospovat (Wooden Wand, Parts and Labor, Meneguar). ten tracks for just $5.00 postpaid.
75OL-013 The 'MERICANS - 'MERICAN RECORDINGS, featuring ex-members of Purple Ivy Shadows, in a silkscreened edition of only 250 copies. Featuring the songs of CHRIS DALTRY- rootsy folky moody pop songs about another way of seeing things. Includes appearances by Joel Thibodeau of Death Vessel and String Builder, former Purple Ivy Shadows member Will Rice and Margie Wienk on upright bass. Eight tracks for only $8.00 postpaid.
75OL-012 Lame Drivers- Captain Amazing EP Reissue. In 2005, Providence, RI's Lame Drivers secretly released The Captain Amazing EP - five hook-filled and fuzzed out songs. Now, it's officially released with five extra bonus tracks. Not far removed from GBV, Replacements, Hüsker Dü, The Zeros, Elvis Costello, The Capstan Shafts. $5.00 postpaid. 150 silkscreened copies made.
75OL-011 Cowboy Steve K- self titled EP. Once an 80's rock devotee, he now distills his musings through the rubric of country song. Some say his songs are like a bar room sing-along without the chorus. A critic once penned that Cowboy Steve K reminded him of a drunk version of Rain Man. These wide-ranging perspectives illustrate the dichotomy that is Cowboy Steve K: half troubadour, half versifier, and half true. And that ain't half bad. Our shortest print run ever at only 50 silkscreened copies made. $4.00 postpaid.
75OL-010 Fred Kendal Abong- Moonman. This Rhode Island singer/songwriter is mostly known as onetime bass player for both Throwing Muses and Belly. the monthly rant....To everyone who has linked us up, thank you so much. Our hits keep growing each week, it's really been shocking. Make sure you check out everything else these websites have to offer and also the ones on the right column. Share these links with friends and always give credit to the sites for hosting them when you do. The bands have been nice enough to allow these shows to be recorded and traded so make sure you go see them live and buy stuff at the shows or through their label. If you have linked us up, let me know and I will return the favor. No, I do not plan on updating more than once per week.

if you enjoy these shows, please link me up on your site and i will do the same. traffic has been steadily increasing here since I started and I am discovering more and more music sites as a result. the websites that are hosting or discovering these shows deserve all the credit along with the performers themselves. i am just a gatherer of links, nothing more. i will only update once a week, mostly on fridays. share these shows with friends, never sell them or include them on ebay as a "free bonus" with a legit item. these bands have been nice enough to let this music be taped and traded for free, so do the right thing.

love you and miss you.

This has always been my favorite article by Leslie. Read it and smile. - A Brief Catechism of Rock Shows, Part I.
Leslie's impact is all over the web today and while some may find mourning over the internet tacky or shallow, it is a fact that Leslie had friends from all over, most of them due to the internet. It's how we met. All because of a music review on 75orLess. She then joined our staff, writing for us when she felt like it. It was our pleasure to have her because anyone who spoke to her for more than five minutes knew they were talking to someone who was real, funny, genuine, honest and more talented than anyone you had ever met before. She was a web design and publishing pioneer on the internet. Her infamous yearly Advent calender was touching and funny. She had better taste in music than anyone else- including you. She also put things in perspective, by managing to make time for everyone despite having physical ailments and emotional tribulations most of us will never have to go through.
I had the pleasure of travelling to new york city with slatch to sleep on her floor one night 4-5 years ago. she gave me a box of Richard Simmons "Slimmons" toffee popcorn as a parting gift, which i still have. i also had the pleasure of dining with her while out in san francisco twice over the past few years, once a thai restaurant and the last time, a homecooked vegetarian meal that she made for us. delicious. i found a copy of the Rex "Waltz" ep at Ameoba records that day and i happily handed it to her. it was a special cd for the both of us, one of the bands that we initially bonded over. now in what is a very bittersweet moment looking back, it was leslie who emailed me to let me know that michael dalhquist was killed. it is also even weirder that the very last silkworm cd, "chokes" arrived in the mail for me this past week. most importantly, she was the person who invited me to join the "squat" cd music exchange club run by todd levin and through that music exchange, something that had nothing to do with music ended up changing my life.
Leslie wrote this about the senseless and tragic death of Silkworm drummer Michael Dahlquist's in 2005:
[Any] sense of sinecure you have is largely a construct, a coping mechanism your brain gives you as a little present so you can get things done and not obsess constantly about all the random things that could go wrong. When you're playing the "What if?" game - "What if I'm hit by a bus? What if lightning strikes?" it all sounds so ludicrous. Then something like this happens, and the next thing you know, you're sitting behind the wheel of my car at a red light trying to figure out if the guy in the Taurus pulling up behind me is slowing down fast enough.
Saying it could happen any time sounds so morbid and pessimistic, but I think I'm going to take a different reading of it. Thanks be it could happen at any time, because that will remind me to love with full force, speak my mind, trust my heart, do my best, make a difference, give more selflessly.
if you didn't know her, here is just a sample of some of the things that are currently online regarding her work, articles, companies, and thoughts on her passing. god bless you, leslie harpold and thank you for being my friend.

Also, The 'MERICANS get coverage in this week's Providence Phoenix for the cd release show this friday. While mentioning the silkscreened edition of 250 copies, and the show to celebrate the release, they somehow managed to not mention the label its released on. snatching defeat from the hands of victory......
Finally, The Agenda has printed a story of mine in the Randy Hein memorial section. The best email I have received about it was someone who said "the guy in the glitter wig was the future you.", which when i think about it, is the only correct answer. It should be mentioned that Randy was a great guy who did more for music in Rhode Island than anyone else. Reading the other people's stories brought back a ton of memories of shows i went to and people i haven't seen in years. if even one of my old friends reads that and gets in touch with me, i would be very happy.
anyways, i have reprinted the articles below. read them if you want.
THE PHOENIX
All 'Merican
Chris Daltry has made bewitching indie and acoustic-based roots music for quite a while, going back to the acclaimed Purple Ivy Shadows and continuing with the on-again/off-again work of his pet project the 'Mericans. Daltry's latest incarnation is a lazy susan of a band, with rotating members all taking turns bringing their leader's songs to life. But Daltry hasn't made a significant recording of his 'Mericans work - until now.
'Merican Recordings is inspired by Johnny Cash's work of nearly the same name. As you might know, in his last years, Cash was coaxed by producer Rick Rubin to record a collection of sparse numbers, just his voice and an acoustic guitar. In the same way, 'Merican Recordings is Daltry, a guy with Southern roots himself, expressing his admiration for both Cash and the acoustic idiom.
The 20-minute EP, pressed in a silk-screened, limited edition of 250, includes eight gorgeous tracks, all written, recorded, and mixed by Daltry. He was joined in the studio by Joel Thibodeau (String Builder/Death Vessel) on background vocals, mandolin, and harmonica, Margie Wienk (Fern Knight) on upright bass, and Daltry's former Purple Ivy Shadow partner Will Rice on banjo.
Daltry's best work has the bucolic flavor of acoustic archetypes like Dylan, Woody Guthrie, and Neil Young and his record release party, featuring a full band helping him flesh out these tunes, should be the perfect showcase for it.

Rock Out with Your Tail Out
75 or Less saves a few little creatures By: Don DiMuccio
With the Democrats back at the helm in the Halls of Justice, there seems to be an unmistakable whiff of philanthropic good will in the air. Even Rhode Island musicians, who can often be the most ornery of bastards, have lent their collective helping hand with a project whose aid will help a more-than-worthy cause.
Spearheaded under the guidance of 75orless Records (both an indie label and an online music review site whose mission statement is "It's gotten to the point where if you can't say it in 75 words or less, you should shut the f@# up!"), two CD compilations have been released with proceeds benefiting PARL (The Providence Animal Rescue League).
Entitled Rock Out With Your Tail Out, this two-volume, limited edition set pretty much covers the entire diverse array of the regional indie scene. Everyone from seasoned songsmiths Heather Rose and Eric Fontana, to puerile rockers Mustache Ride make their presence known on either one volume or the other.
The meticulously assembled package is deemed all the more sweeter when one sits down to consider the selfless help that PARL provides for unwanted animals through pet adoption, animal health issues, and most important educating the community on all these subjects.
All totaled, this altruistic endeavor consists of two CDs, 31 bands, and close to 2 hours of what Rhode Island has to offer the music world at large. Aside from the lofty charitable aspect of Rock Out With Your Tail Out, a special word of note is required to honor the packaging of this two volume set. Housed in thick cardboard stock, the hand-numbered, flip-top sleeve contains not only the disc, but also a great 75orless bumper sticker, and more importantly a foldout information sheet, detailing copious notes on each track and band.
Basically, purchasing Rock Out With Your Tail Out kills a few birds with one stone .. .ok, that was an unfortunate choice of cliche'.
But the point does remain that you can feel good about your dollars going to help Rhode Island's animal population, all the while familiarizing yourself with Rhode Island's other animal population - indie bands!
THE AGENDA
I went to the (bubble) Living Room countless times using my older brothers fake ID, seeing Black Flag, Husker Du, Replacements, Sonic Youth, Bad Brains etc, but whenever I think of the Living Room, I think of one particular night in late 1987. I went to the show with three friends and got separated but afterwards, when I walked back to the car, it wasn't there. I walked around the parking lot many times and didn't have any luck finding them. I was really fucked and I only had 7 bucks on me. Being 20 miles from home and there were no cell phones back then, I really didn't know what to do. So I started to walk down the street and into a huge empty lot with dirt piles everywhere - this is now where the Mall / Waterplace Park is. It was a very foggy, chilly fall night and I really was in a panic. As I walked across the lot towards the old bus station, a Monte Carlo pulled up near me, rolled down the window and a voice said "you must be lost" and asked if I wanted a ride. I looked up to see a guy wearing a huge red mullet glitter wig. I did the math in my 18 year old head: in Providence, unlimited crazy people. In this car: one.
So, I got in and offered him my last seven dollars for gas money. I was so clueless, I didn't even know which highway to take to get me back home, so this poor guy drove for what seemed like forever, first to 95N then 95S then Route 10. Finally, we ended up on the correct highway -195 East - and we were on our way. He drove for ten minutes to the Warren / Newport exit and dropped me off. I begged him for two dollars back, in case I needed it for the last five miles to get home and he said OK.
It had to be almost 3 a.m. as I started to walk towards home and took about ten steps before a car was exiting the highway. I turned, stuck my thumb out and who was in the car that came rolling out of the fog? The friends I went to the show with! They had gone out to eat after the show and I don't know how the hell the timing worked out but to this day I have never been so pissed off and happy at the same time to see someone I knew. To Randy, thank you for the many years of live music - and to the red mullet glitter wig guy, whoever you were, thanks to you too.

WFMU Music Blog has some video goodness for you. First, the five best public access music videos ever. Also, a longtime 75orless favorite, Tampa Florida's public access queen Sondra Prill. I have tormented coworkers for many years with her mp3 combo of Robert Palmer's "Addicted To Love" and Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love For You". It really is off the charts BAD. There is a hysterically funny biography over at 365 Days Project, where you can also download the mp3. Scroll down a little bit and read while you listen. The following account of the disasterous hurricane fundraiser show from that page is classic:
Sondra and "My Show" disappeared from Jones Intercable after the third installment, but Sondra made at least one more attempt to bring her talent to the masses. In 1992, Sondra and her mother-benefactress Regina rented the 900-seat Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center Playhouse Theatre to present "A Musical Fantasy", for which a portion of the proceeds were to be donated to victims of the recent Hurricane Andrew. I'll let Daniel Ruth of the Tampa Tribune fill in the rest:
"Ticket prices for her show ranged up to $50, a testimony to a rather intriguing assessment of her talents considering recent (and slightly better known) TBPAC performers such as Al Green and Patti LaBelle charged a maximum ticket price of $25.
"Of course Green and LaBelle lack Sultry Sondra's unique way of handling a melody - a cross between the dulcet sound of setting one's hair on fire and sticking one's hand into a garbage disposal.
"Friday night's show was not without its highlights. First, it started about 20 minutes late and in an inadvertent gaffe much to the delight of the audience, Sultry Sondra's microphone failed during one of her songs, which meant we were all spared from having to listen to her.
"Fortunately for the rest of the city, there weren't that many of us in the audience. Only 41 tickets were sold to Sultry Sondra, a commentary on the good sense of the populace. Of course they did miss that dramatic moment during the performance where Sultry Sondra had honey poured all over her for no particular reason. Say, That's Entertainment!
"Needless to say the victims of Hurricane Andrew won't be benefitting much from Friday's extravaganza of the banal. But then again, perhaps the folks down in Miami could send Sultry Sondra a few bucks - as professional courtesy from one disaster to another."

Record Robot posts the rare Leonard Nemoy album "The Touch of...."
Jefito has a great, unique website. It has always been a place to stop in and read his detailed and painfully honest profiles of musicians bodies of work over their careers- album by album, warts and all. Aside from posting amazing live shows and rare collections of outtakes, he also loves to review horrible cds from the cutout bin. He recently ran a review of our Turnpike Glow release.
Turnpike Glow - Rush Home
here's Rush Home in 75 words or less:
Evokes the best of early-early '90s alt-pop, when the guitars were good 'n swirly and the layers of sound were airy and plentiful. The RIYL thing is seldom accurate enough to be useful, but call these guys, oh, I don't know, The Sundays meets Pavement, but with enough of a twist to keep nostalgia from completely running the show. Download a pair of songs from the band's website and hear for yourself.

cassette boy, modest mouse and PARL benefit show tonight
Postpunk Junk has a mix from cassette boy, which is described as "built from thousands upon thousands of samples, sound bites and music clips that have been hacked, slashed, looped and rearranged to skew meaning and entice parody. Not only is this album rich in highly slanderous spurts, there is also enough copyright violation here to send any record company lawyer in to a flat spin.
sonorama has modest mouse from 5-19-00
Tonight is a special night at the AS220 in Providence. Seven local bands, who all appeared on the 75orLess Records double cd "Rock Out With Your Tail Out"- including Ben Pilgrim, Eric Fontana, The Propellers, Big World, Suicide Liquors, The Masons and Six Star General- are playing for only a six dollar cover.
